Love this! A lot of the thoughts that I’ve received from others concerns a lack of money/resources. It’s not easy, but I work daily to retrain my thoughts to abundance instead of lack.

They say some of them – “money doesn’t grow on trees” and “money is the root of all evil” being two I’ve heard from non-black people.

Daneesha my guess is that ‘waiting on the Lord’ means to just ‘pray on it’ and see what happens. And exactly as you said, if God doesn’t bring it to you, then you can’t really be mad or blame yourself, b/c it wasn’t part of His ‘plan’.

I have a theory on what our purpose is for being here, but I feel like its an unpopular one that people won’t want to hear.

thanks Tiff, and you’re exactly right. Its the practice part that’s a bit… hard isn’t the right word. You just have to get used to turning a thought on its head immediately after you think it.

So often we just run on autopilot, and don’t even realize how our mind and our thoughts rule us, not the other way around…

his is a great post and a lot to chew on. the thing is, even once you realize that “you are not your thoughts,” you have to understand how not to engage them. But you’re right – you have to realize that you are not your thoughts or anyone else’s before you can make any headway at all.

I just laughed as I read some of those. I have heard them all my life and MOST of the time, I have heard it from Black people. What’s up with that? Do white people say these things to their kids/friends?

My favorite one is “waiting on the Lord.” I don’t know what that means. Literally, it sounds like people are waiting for a miracle to happen without putting in the work. Add to that, only doing something if it fulfills God’s purpose. But do we really KNOW what his purpose is for us? I mean how many people can say that they do? I suppose if things don’t go the way they should, then that’s a sign right? wrong? (shrugs.)

I am a Christian and I believe in God, but I just don’t believe in “name dropping” the Lord’s name. You know?

And as someone who loves without color and supports interracial dating, I really laugh at the one where “they’ll only date someone (of a different ethnicity) if they…..(insert absurd, non-realistic quality here)…”
