Beyond The Secret Part II

This is the 2nd part of our series on the law of attraction. For Part 1, click here.

As I stated in the last post, the starting point of understanding the law of attraction is knowing what it literally means. The law of attraction is a universal law – meaning that its a law that’s in place and works in the Universe whether you know about it or believe in it.

It doesn’t matter if you believe in the law of gravity. When an apple falls off a tree, its going to hit the ground, whether you believe in the law of gravity or not. So it is with the law of attraction.

The law of attraction is “that which is like unto itself is drawn”. Stated another way, “like attracts like”. It’s also stated as “you get what you think about, whether you want it or not.” I could go on and on, but the basic concept is that your thoughts can become things.

The law works in three steps: you ask for something by having thoughts of it; the Universe answers that asking and brings the subject of the thought to you; and then you receive what you’ve asked for. Each step of the process can take up a whole book by itself (and I wouldn’t be surprised if someone has written about each individually).

Way Before The Secret

The movie The Secret came out in 200x. But the law of attraction is not new at all and was never really a secret. From The website:

The Secret has existed throughout the history of humankind. It has been discovered, coveted, suppressed, hidden, lost, and recovered. It has been hunted down, stolen, and bought for vast sums of money.

Fragments of The Secret have been found in the oral traditions, in literature, in religions and philosophies throughout the centuries.

So the movie was the vehicle to introduce the law of attraction to the masses.

One of the most famous books that discusses the law of attraction is Think And Grow Rich, first published in 1937. I get so annoyed when people call the metaphysical school of thought New Age thinking because its not really new.

In fact, the way we generally think now – life is a ‘take it or leave it’ affair – is what’s new. Even in religion we have faith in God or a Higher Power that orchestrates and governs life, so our present mainstream way of thinking is what’s new and against the historical grain.

The 3-Step Process

Step 1 – Ask. You desire something, and your beliefs, feelings and vibration about it communicates to the Universe that you want it.

Step 2 – Answer. The Universe (or God, if you will) responds to your vibration and begins to align the people, resources and things to bring about your desire. You are totally independent of this process.

Step 3 – Receive. You allow your desire to manifest (or become material) in your life.

All You Must Do Is Ask

We are made of vibrations. If you distill a human, or any being on Earth, down to its smallest element, you’ll find that we’re subatomic particles. Those protons, neutrons and electrons are constantly moving – vibrating. I don’t know the specifics of how it works, but our vibration about a subject draws that subject to us.

You ever meet someone and instantly get a good or bad vibe about them?

You were feeling their vibration, probably their basic belief about themselves and other people that communicates to you through their physical being.

You ask for something to appear in your life by your feelings and beliefs about it. This is the part that’s most frustrating about the law of attraction, because we draw to ourselves things that we don’t want by putting our attention to it.

With that focus on the undesired thing, our strong emotion of dislike is drawing that thing to us. The Universe doesn’t differentiate between something we want or something we don’t want – it simply answers the call of what we’re focusing on and including in our vibration. Then it orchestrates and brings that thing to us.

As soon as you think of something, your emotions attach to the thought. That is the moment of your asking. You don’t manifest every single thing you think about because you don’t focus on every single thing you think about. And some thoughts are just thoughts, so you don’t repeat them and don’t vibrate strong enough to bring them to you.

Be Careful What You Ask For

Here’s a perfect example of the Asking step: when I first began consciously using the law of attraction to manifest my desires (we use the law whether we know or believe in it), I tried a little experiment. I said that I’d know the law of attraction worked if I could manifest my favorite parking spot at my apartment complex every day. The spot was right in front of my building and I usually got home too late to claim it.

So I visualized parking in the spot and how happy I was every time I scored it. And I forgot about it. Well wouldn’t you know, the spot became open every day. And I parked in it for about a week before I realized that I had manifested the spot. You’d think I was happy, right? I mean, here was the evidence that my experiment was successful and the law of attraction really works.

I reacted in the exact opposite way. I though to myself, “OMG, what if I stop getting the spot? Does that mean that the law of attraction really doesn’t work?” Every time I pulled into my complex, I started expecting the spot to be taken. I felt a stab of fear every time I thought of it, because I wanted to believe in the law of attraction. I wanted it to work but I feared seeing that spot occupied.

After about 2 days of this, the spot was gone.

What This Means For You

Your asking is instantaneous. You can not ask for something. If you desire something, in that first moment of focusing on it, you’re communicating to the Universe that you want it in your life. The same goes for things you don’t want; your attention to it and strong emotion about it makes it show up.

So the asking step is something that you don’t have to worry about. What you do have to work on, though, is your belief and emotion about your desire. Those are part of allowing your desire to manifest, which we’ll get into later.

Your main concern is believing that you will receive your desire and having a happy expectation that you’re going to receive it, without a doubt.
